How to Paint a Plastic Playhouse Like a Pro!

First, you need to decide what base colors you would like your house to be. This makes it easier to coordinate the fab accessories you will add later. We went with a white house, charcoal roof + shutters, light blue door, and gold finishes.

For spray paint, we used Rust-Oleum’s 2X line and had great luck with it. Be sure to use spray paint that says PLASTIC on it, or you will ruin your precious cottage.

Note: Some links may be affiliate links. That means I may make a commission if you use these links to purchase. this comes at no extra cost to you.

Supply List

  • Plastic Playhouse of your choice: we purchased the Little Tikes Cottage Playhouse
  • Spray Paint Primer x 1 can (just for the doors)
  • Spray Paint Sealer x 2 cans
  • Spray Paint Grip: DO NOT attempt this project without this
  • Canvas Drop Cloth Tarp
  • Safety Glasses
  • Work Gloves
  • Plastic Friendly Spray Paint x 11 cans:
    • Body = 7 cans of “White” (only 4 cans if not doing the inside walls)
    • Roof/Shutters = 3 cans of “Granite“
    • Doors = 1 can of “Solstice Blue“
    • Mailbox = 1 can of “Metallic Gold“

Let’s Get Started!

TAKE PLAYHOUSE APART: Whether you’re painting a new plastic playhouse in the box OR a used/put together plastic playhouse, your first step is to take it apart as it’s much easier to paint each piece individually rather than taping off sections. (Note: Andrew and I tried this and it pulled the paint right off. Trust me, just take the house apart.)

CLEAN THE PLAYHOUSE: Prior to painting, make sure the plastic is clean. If it’s been outside, remove all dirt/dust by spraying it with a pressure washer. Make sure the house dries completely. If you have sticker residue left over, Goo Gone works like a champ.

LAY EACH PIECE ONTO A CANVAS DROP CLOTH: Once completely dry, lay each piece of the playhouse in sections onto a canvas drop cloth. Note: a plastic tarp will peel off paint so I highly suggest using a canvas drop cloth.

USE A PLASTIC FRIENDLY SPRAY PAINT: Read those labels! Make 100% sure your spray paint is meant for PLASTIC. Also make sure it is meant to withstand being outside.

PRIME THE DOOR: If you’re using our same model playhouse, there’s no need to prime the whole house, just the door. The door is made of a different plastic (that is slippery) so definitely prime both sides of the door and allow to dry according to the can’s directions before spray painting your final color. If you’re unsure of the plastic materials in your house, take the extra step and prime. No need to sand beforehand (we didn’t), but priming will just extend the life of the playhouse.

SPRAY PAINT: Once primer is dry, paint your pieces the color of your choosing. For this particular makeover, we spray painted the roof and shutters light gray, the exterior (and interior) white, the door blue, and the mailbox, bell, and flag pole gold.

LET DRY FOR 48 HOURS BEFORE SEALING: After 48 hours of dry time, we spray sealed the whole house (2 coats) for added durability. Waiting 2 days was great, since the house still smelled like paint after 24 hours. We did 4 coats of sealant on the door as it gets the most use and for this particular model of a playhouse, the doors chip so easily. Plan for a few touch-ups after putting the door on, as it will likely rub off here and there.

ADD THE FINISHING TOUCHES…ACCESSORIZE: Once all of the paint was sealed, we accessorized this beauty. We added brass drawer pulls to the doors then drilled holes next to the doorway to hang a bell. We also added 2 planter boxes, and a fabulous macrame hanging planter I made myself!
