Coronavirus Homeschool Survival

March 17, 2020 · In: Motherhood

Seriously, why is toilet paper sold out everywhere?!

We are currently on Day 4 of no school due to coronavirus pandemic. Yesterday, Landon paraded a slew of his friends from the neighborhood into our home unannounced. Mind you we are supposed to be QUARANTINED! After calling my husband at work to rant (aka scream very loudly) about Landon’s bold move, I knew something had to be done.

Like most of you, I had a slight heart attack thinking about how I would entertain my 12 year old for God knows how long until coronavirus subsides. I despise video games, and knew I did not want him playing them 24-7. So I did what any scholar would do – hopped on Facebook and Google for ideas! 🙂

To note: my kid is all about routine. He functions better when he has some sort of schedule to follow. I totally understand this is not the case for every child, but I am just sharing our reality.

While searching, I kept my goals in mind when narrowing down the search: realistic expectations, easy to follow routine, and fun. Surprisingly, I did find an ample amount of template schedules floating around the web, however, none of them were geared towards what we wanted to accomplish. With that being said, my husband and I sat down with Landon after dinner last night to create a schedule together.

Here is the rough draft of what we came up with.

We incorporated the educational apps he uses in school, as well as the book he was already reading into the mix. We also made it clear to him that this schedule is NOT Bible. To be 100% real, I will be highly impressed if this schedule is still in motion after Day 3. The point is that we are trying to be productive over on these parts. So far Landon is still trekking along happily. Check back with me in a few hours…LOL!

Here are a few cool learning activities I found in my search:

  • Virtual Museum Tours
  • New England Aquarium Live Presentations
  • 30 Virtual Field Trips
  • PBS Learning (preschool, elementary, middle)
  • Scholastic Learn At Home
  • STEM Activity Guide
  • New American History
  • Curriculum Associates (math and reading)
  • Charlotte Mecklenberg Library Resources
  • Mystery Science (K-5)

Are you implementing a homeschool schedule while school is out? Did you utilize any of the tools linked above?
